Funeral Wayside Shrine

A funeral shrine was designed and built in the Borgo Roma Cemetery in Verona. In the reduced dimensions of the intervention area, a construction of square plan was inserted, and the resulting volume is a cube with a flat roof sloping on the diagonal , along which runs a glazed light source that starts from the southern entrance, runs uphill along the roof and descends in the northern corner with a stained glass window. It represents the earthly journey of man as he is invested by the light of faith that leads to rise to heaven, to the light of the Risen One. In the interior, in fact, the position of the urns of the corpses along the sides of the square, leave free the central space naturally illuminated by the upper stained glass window that starting above the entrance window rises to the highest part to the north, to descend to the height of the sculpture of the Risen Christ. The Lessinia stone pavement internally lines the central part of the large trapdoors to allow coffins access to the basement space. The entire exterior of the shrine has been covered with pinkish Lessinia marble from Verona while the roof is made of copper sheet. Light for the votive lamps is provided by small roof-mounted photovoltaic panels.
